Vacheron Constantin is one of the oldest continuously operating watch manufacturers in the world. Founded in 1755 by Jean-Marc Vacheron, who was both a talented young watchmaker and a good businessman (an unusual combination), Vacheron quickly established a reputation for producing finely crafted watches, including some of the first “complications” and the first engine-turned dials.

James Emott Caldwell (1813-81) was an American jeweler who founded J.E. Caldwell & Co in 1839. While best known as a major fine jewelry institution of Philadelphia, over the years since its inception, the firm has also been known for its silver, china, crystal, and even stationery.

I bought this masterpiece from a man who unfortunately did not know too much about the origin of this watch. His father had bought it many decades’ ago from an unknown man. The golden case of this 1907 manufactured Vacheron was broken but the mechanism inside was completely intact and functional. Both the beautiful porcelain enamel and set of dials are genuine.
